In 1991, the artist Boris Vallejo1 created a piece called Atlas as part of a series of trading cards. The piece, showing a very buff and muscular Atlas holding up planet Earth using just his arms, became the dominant image used for memes in the following decades (shown below). There are a few things that make the “biggest planet on earth” meme so appealing. Everyone can relate to being the biggest planet on earth, whether it’s in real life or in the meme world. The meme is often used to make jokes about various situations, and it never fails to get a laugh.
1 Hour on this Planet Is 7 Years on Earth refers to a series of two-panel image macros based on a scene from the 2014 science fiction film Interstellar. In the film, time passes in various ways depending on how deep into space the characters go. At one point, one hour on an alien planet is seven years on earth.
People use the biggest planet on earth meme for many different things. Some people use it to show how large and in charge they are, while others use it to make fun of someone else’s large computer vision libraries ego. Regardless of the reason, the meme is a popular way to make a statement. On January 20th, 2017, the Facebook 3 account Batbale Defenders made one of the earliest two-panel versions of the meme. The post featured two versions of the screenshot and a caption that reads “1 hour on here is 7 years on Earth / Great, We wait here for the Justice League trailer.” The post (shown below) received 40 reactions and 40 shares in eight months.
Despite its humble beginnings, the “biggest planet on earth” meme has had a lasting impact on internet culture. It is a prime example of how a simple idea can spread quickly and have a lasting impact. 4chan is also the birthplace of the “biggest planet on earth” meme.
The earliest known examples of internet memes are “All your base are belong to us” and the Dancing Baby. Both of these memes originated on 4chan, an online message board that is known for its anonymous users and its offbeat sense of humor. On October 26th, 2014, the science fiction film Interstellar premiered.1 In the film, the characters embark on a journey through outer space, landing on a planet where, as the film explains, one hour is equal to seven years on Earth. A screenshot from the scene, as well as the concept for the temporal limitations of the planet are the basis for the meme. Brown dwarfs are also too big to count as planets, which are technically classified as about 13 times the mass of Jupiter.
When ancient astronomers named the planet Jupiter for the Roman ruler of the gods and heavens (also known as Jove), they had no idea of the planet’s true dimensions, but the name is appropriate, for Jupiter is larger than all the other planets combined. It takes nearly 12 Earth years to orbit the Sun, and it rotates once about every 10 hours, more than twice as fast as Earth; its colourful cloud bands can be seen with even a small telescope. It has a narrow system of rings and 92 known moons, one larger than the planet Mercury and three larger than Earth’s Moon. Some astronomers speculate that Jupiter’s moon Europa may be hiding an ocean of warm water—and possibly even some kind of life—beneath an icy crust. Atlas Holding The Earth refers to two different pictures made to represent the titan called Atlas who was reportedly cursed with having to hold up the Earth in Ancient Greek mythology. Online, the two art pieces are both used in object labeling and image macro memes to signify something that is doing the heavy lifting and carrying another thing, whether physical or a concept.

On July 16th, 2022, TikToker2 blackstarastro reposted the 4K Earth zoom-out video, earning roughly 29,900 plays and over 660 likes in one month (shown below, left). On July 22nd, TikToker3 mrmiyagiiooo shared a video of him painting at his desk with Frank Ocean’s “Pink + White” from the 2016 album Blonde playing as the audio. In four weeks, the video received roughly 2.6 million plays and 645,100 likes (shown below, right).
This is meant to show how small our planet is in comparison to the size of the universe, and how we should value our time here instead of wasting it on things that don’t matter. The popularity of the “When did the biggest planet on earth meme first appear?” meme seems to be attributable to its relatable and funny content. The meme hits home for many people who feel like they are constantly behind the times, whether it be in terms of knowledge, trends, or technology. The simple format of the meme also makes it easy to create and Bull bear power share.
The biggest planet on earth meme has also been used to make political commentary. For example, during the 2016 US presidential election, the meme was used to contrast the size of Earth with that of Jupiter, with Jupiter being represented as Hillary Clinton and Earth as Donald Trump. This version of the meme was often used to point out the size difference between Earth and Jupiter, with Earth seeming much smaller in comparison. Over time, the meme evolved to include other planets in the solar system, such as Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The captions also became more humorous, with Earth being referred to as a “peanut” in comparison to the other planets.
